I have a rescue Chow mix. She is a little small, either because she's a mix, or because I suspect she was abused and neglected as a pup. She is classically independent, stoic, and definitely a one person dog. She was in an accident when she was about a year old, where she lost her front left leg. Now, she has some back problems, and her back right leg has arthritis at the knee and ankle. She is still a very sweet girl.

For all my fellow Chow lovers I posted this in addition to a past blog about our first Chow. We are so excited to have this wonderful addition. We love this breed because they are like the feline of the canine world. They are independant, stoic, faithful and loving. Can't wait to totally over-socialize her and love her to pieces!!! :)

What a weekend! We drove our children to pick up our new puppy. It was a 6 ½ hour car ride, each way, involving a hotel stay and about 40 jillion potty breaks. It was an adventure to say the least. I am still a little fried, honestly.

We picked up my husband’s dream dog. After owning a cinnamon Chow for 11 years and mourning her for two we decided it was time to add a new baby to our home. We found this amazing kennel in Fairborn, OH. D&M Farm was an incredible place run by equally wonderful people. The newest member of our family is a black Chow named Pepper who is just as black as she can be. Her fur, her eyes, her gums, tongue, paws, and nails are all the same beautiful jet black. Her attitude is chill and she is super great at the whole potty training bit (so far) especially for only being 6 weeks old. The kids are crazy about her and need constant reminding that we will have her for her whole life. That is if they don’t squeeze her to death trying to love her.

The hardest part of Pepper so far is trying to get a picture of her to share with everyone. She is so all one shade of dark that any photo I have tried taking is just a shadow of her actual cuteness. For this task I called on a very good friend and photographer to see if she would have any luck. Wouldn’t ya know, she did. Enjoy the pic.

Our first baby was a dog.

Lucille, Lucy, Lou Lou, Loula Girl. We had her for 8 years before we had any children. On February 24, 2007 she was diagnosed with cancerous tumors in every one of her teats. The tumors kept growing in size and, let's face it, she was over 11 years old so when one had split through the skin we made the hardest decision to date. On February 23, 2008 we said a heartbreaking goodbye to our little girl. She was a miracle dog in every way possible. The best Chow, friend, and family member we could ever have asked for.
And we miss her.

Has anyone here ever tried the Swamp Cooler for their dog?

This was recommended on another forum I belong to as a way to help keep Chows cool when they're outside during the summer months. I'm in Florida where the summers are long, hot and humid and this looks like it would be a great product but wanted to try and get more feedback before buying.

Thanks in advance!

What's the best way to correct a naughty chow puppy? I'm having a hard time getting my 2 and a half month old puppy to realize when he's doing something bad. He usually just thinks we're playing!

hi everyone!

i recently got my first ever chow puppy. i have done alot of reading about how chows need to be raised, and now i'm hellbent on making sure i socialize him correctly and train him right. but the thing is, he's nothing like any dog i've ever had, so i was hoping you guys could help me out with some questions. :)

1. he doesn't like playing fetch or really play, and is generally content to just chill out/get petted. i've only had golden retrievers and english bulldogs, so maybe my games for him aren't chow-appropriate? do you guys recommend any games/activities for chow puppies that are better suited for them? i'm worried him laying around is a sign of boredom. tbh, i've never had a puppy before, so i was expecting a really hyper crazy puppy, so i'm a little thrown off.

2. i'm really concerned about how he will react with other dogs. i read that chows don't get along with dogs of the same sex that aren't in their household. my family who i visit alot all have male dogs (bulldogs, spaniels, etc), and i really want to make sure that my puppy is used to playing with other dogs. i've been thinking about a combination of obedience classes and weekly trips to the dog park. do you guys recommend anything else?

3. any advice/ tips/tricks/stories would be greatly appreciated!

i just really want to make sure i raise my puppy right when he's still young and easily correctable. alot of people that found out i got a chow puppy have been warning me about how they're vicious and tempermental dogs, and i'd really like to prove them wrong.

thanks alot!

hi there!

what are the differences between girl and boy chows? for a first-time chow owner, is one or the other better to start out with as a beginner?

I hope this is okay to post here! Although I do not own a Chow, I just wanted to share a recent piece of mine with you all.

Chow Chow Pendant

Chow Chow Pendant
Available at Kayann Works Gifts

This sweet Chow Chow is featured with the Chinese calligraphy for "Songshi Quan" -- which I'm sure you all know is what the breed is actually called in China. It's Chinese roots literally mean "puffy-lion dog" and is also one of the native models used for the foo dogs outside of many temples and shrines. :)

It's actually a real domino featuring my illustration, signed on the reverse (and dotted) side. If this isn't allowed, please let me know!. I don't mean to step on any toes but wanted to share a little art -- I'm always thrilled when I see Corgi art or one of my own dogs anywhere.

Here is a pic of my girl, Fierra Foxey. She has 3 legs, and is about 7 years old. I got her from my vet's office, which is next door to my dad's office. Her old owners had her in the back of a pickup truck and she fell out and got drug. They dropped her off at the vet and never came back. The vet office had her for a while and were going to put her to sleep since they couldn't find her a home (she does NOT like most men, and she is skiddish of children - I am pretty sure she was abused). They called my dad to see if he knew anyone who could take her. I went to see her, and fell in love...

She is sweet and super protective. For a single girl who lives alone, she is a great watchdog. And she likes my cats, too. She is also the only dog I've ever had that had to be coaxed into coming in the house - she'd rather stay outside and chase birds and squirrels. I can't tell you how many times I've been outside when it was below freezing trying to get her to come in the house. She doesn't even like to come in when it's raining, she justs runs around and plays in the rain :)
